What does it mean to be a responsible global citizen?
This Earth Day, we want to share some of the ways that Shikohin commits to our promise of delivering eco-friendly, sustainable skincare that not only boasts regenerative properties for your skin, but for our world as well.
Our uplifting yuzu essential oils are sourced from farmers in Miyazaki, Kochi, and other regions of Japan. As part of a sustainable, regenerative process, our farmers harvest the yuzu to make yuzu juice and candied yuzu peels. Then, we extract essential oils from the residual peel and pith left over after the process. Once we extract the essential oils, we blend the peels and pulp with chicken manure to use as organic fertilizer for yuzu cultivation, closing the loop in a fully regenerative process.
Benefits of yuzu essential oil:
• The citrusy aroma is light and refreshing–like a cross between a grapefruit and red mandarin.
• It is uplifting and helps to reduce anxiety.
• Yuzu essential oil is a great friend for the respiratory and digestive system.
• It helps with respiratory congestion due to allergies, colds, & flu.
• Yuzu also possesses antimicrobial benefits and is great for the immune system.
• It contains powerful antioxidants like vitamin C and limonene, which help neutralize harmful free radicals and reduce inflammation.
• It is beneficial for the muscular system and achy joints.
Hiba, or Japanese cypress, is known for its woody, calming aroma. The oil has a citrusy, cider-like fragrance that is purifying, uplifting, and stimulating. Our Hiba essential oil is sourced from 300-year-old Aomori Hiba trees from Aomori, Japan.
Working with a business that recycles forest resources, we source sustainably from discarded lumber scraps, sawdust, bark, and thin wood that could not be used for construction.
Because Japanese cypress matures slowly over the course of 250-300 years, hiba wood is considered a scarce and precious resource, so we take the utmost care in extracting its oils as sustainably as possible.
Benefits of hiba essential oil :
• It relaxes the mind with its citrusy, cedar-like fragrance
• Hydrates dry skin and remedies conditions such as eczema
Pycnogenol is extracted from the bark of French maritime pine trees in Landes de Gasogne, an area in southwestern France. The thick multilayered outer bark is harvested from 30-year-old trees that have been cultivated for timber. The 2.5 million acre forest is a national park and the largest in Europe.
Under regulation by the French government, cut trees are replaced by seedlings, making the entire process sustainable.
Benefits of maritime bark extract :

Konjac is a root vegetable that grows in parts of Asia. It’s known for its starchy corm, a tuber-like part of the stem that grows underground. Organic konjac is grown without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides and is cultivated by creating soil that takes advantage of natural circulation, using proprietary vitalizing agents to draw out the plant’s natural vitality and antibacterial properties.
The production of safe konjac sponges begins from the soil where the raw material, konjac, is grown. Yamamoto Farm makes konjac sponges using 100% edible all-natural konjac powder, so they’re free from preservatives, antibacterial agents, or petroleum-derived ingredients. The best part is, they’re also 100% biodegradable, so they may be returned to the ground after use, enriching the soil with nutrients for the next crop of konjac root.
They’re gentle, natural, and comfortable
When hydrated with warm water, the surface of the sponge becomes a water film. The film acts as a barrier between the fibers of the sponge and your skin, preventing scratches and abrasions. Due to konjac’s high capacity for water retention, it is extra soft and gentle on the skin, making it particularly effective for people with sensitive skin. Konjac sponges were first used for bathing infants over 120 years ago. Since then, konjac sponges have become popular for facial cleansing due to their gentleness, comfort, and effectiveness.
They clean fine hairs and dirty follicles without the need for soap
Dirt and your skin’s natural oils, known as sebum, produce a slightly acidic environment on the skin’s surface. The konjac sponge’s watery film is slightly alkaline, which neutralizes the acidic sebum and dirt in your pores, while washing away fine hair. This results in a refreshing wash, without having to lather on strong chemical cleansers.
They smooth your skin using the power of plants
Since sebum or keratotic plugs look like tiny bumps under your skin, a konjac sponge helps unclog these pores, leaving your skin healthier, cleaner, and smoother. Our all natural plant-based konjac fiber sponge is the secret to maintaining delicate and beautiful skin. Its light, supple touch helps remove dirt and impurities without even using soap.
We don’t believe in controlling nature. Instead, we respect its power and seek to coexist peacefully in—and with— it. We honor this relationship as we continue to curate sustainably sourced, potent Asian ingredients for our beauty solutions.
Combining ancient wisdom with proven science, we enhance our products with the highest quality CBD for healing and calming effects that allow you to enjoy inner peace and tranquility in harmony with nature.
